Big Bear Lake California is located in the mountains of southern California approximately 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest, Big Bear Lake is a year round resort area, situated 7,000 feet above sea level. The Lake sits against a backdrop of towering pines, with crystal clear water, blue skies, fresh mountain air, and over 300 days of sunshine on average per year. All types of water sports are available on the lake, such as swimming, boating, fishing and water skiing. Big Bear Lake has two mountain ski resorts, a local zoo, miniature golf, a water slide park and a tranquil mountain village full of unique shops and restaurants. Any time of the year is the perfect time to come to Big Bear Lake, too, whether it’s for the fishing and boating in spring and summer, the gorgeous weather and colors of fall, or the downhill skiing in wintertime. It’s the only resort in southern California that offers four distinct seasons. An easy drive from Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego, many people visiting southern California in wintertime are surprised to find snow. Rest assured that you’ll see plenty of snow in the mountains surrounding Big Bear Lake – perfect for snowboarding, sledding, world-class skiing – all amid some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the country.

Big Bear Lake is also home to a Discovery Center that offers wildflower walks, bird walks, and stargazing “Nature Nights.” There is some sort of special event or festival going on in the Big Bear Lake area literally every day. There’s Old Miner’s Days, Oktoberfest, jazz festivals, and car shows, trout fishing competitions, rodeos, snowboard competitions and more. Big Bear also hasn’t gone unnoticed by Hollywood – so many movies have been filmed here it’s been dubbed “Hollywood’s Back Lot.” Motion pictures such as “Paint Your Wagon,” “Yukon Gold,” and “Dr. Dolittle” have been shot on location at Big Bear – but the filming never disrupts the beauty and tranquility of the area. Besides camping, Big Bear Lake has lakeside cabins and lodges, hotels, bed and breakfasts and rental properties available for visitors. Whether you prefer something rustic in the great outdoors, or something a little more “country chic,” you’re likely to find it in Big Bear. The alpine village of Big Bear Lake is a nice place to take a leisurely stroll and explore the restaurants and quaint shops. A lot of people like to escape the cities in the valleys below and come to the mountains of Big Bear Lake to simply kick back and relax at a lakeside cabin or cottage, put their feet up and read a good book – or listen to the silence. Big Bear Lake is a pleasant, friendly community that operates at a much slower pace than many of the other places in southern California, therefore earning the nickname of “The Great Escape.” So if you’re looking for a place to relieve the pressures of everyday life, where you can breathe in the scent of pines and fresh mountain air, Big Bear Lake has what you need.
